The AUC and IGAD strengthened their cooperation on the implementation of AUBGS at a regional exchange meeting in Uganda in May, 2024. This aimed to inform the IGAD Secretariat and the IGAD member states about the AUBGS and to create a basis for the implementation of them at regional and national level in order to promote adapted border governance in the region. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Sarjoh Bah, the AU's Director of Conflict Management, said that the strategy will introduce a new form of pragmatic border governance on the African continent that aims to promote peace, security and stability to facilitate the integration process and sustainable development in Africa. The strategy provides a reference document to develop national and regional border policies that are consistent with the AU's goals, values and principles, thus aligning the AU's efforts with its overarching objectives. AU and IGAD also stressed the importance of strengthened cooperation to strengthen cross-border cooperation in the region. As a result of the exchange meeting, a joint action plan between the AUK and IGAD is to be developed in 2024.
