Through diverse and complementary interventions, border governance has become increasingly central thanks to the policies, strategies and initiatives adopted by the AU and the RECs and their implementation by Member States and non-state actors. This section provides highlights what is going on the ground within the framework of the AUBP. Day by day, the number of Member States engaged in delimitation and demarcation of their boundaries with neighbours is increasing. This indicates a growing ownership of AUBP implementation. This subsection will report on initiatives undertaken by Member States on the lengthy processes of delimitation and demarcation of land, sea, lake, and river boundaries.

The drafting, validation and signing of treaties and agreements is an essential step in both the delimitation and demarcation and in the establishment of cross-border cooperation measures. This subsection on legal instruments and legal frameworks will cover actions undertaken in this area by Member States in the framework of the implementation of the AUBP.

The structures for the implementation of the AUBP in the Member States are the National boundary Commissions and the Bilateral Border Management Commissions. These Commissions implement the action plans jointly drawn up to conduct delimitation and demarcation operations. They also support decentralized bodies in carrying out cross-border cooperation measures. This subsection provides information on the establishment of these commissions and their functioning and decisions.

Conducted at continental, regional, and national levels, AUBP implementation requires constant coordination and monitoring between the AUC and the RECs. It is through this mechanism that the principles of complementarity and subsidiarity are applied in practice.
